Feature niche and storage

Bespoke bathroom storage niche with smart mood lighting in a Harvington master ensuite

Never Enough Storage

Sometimes the smallest design ideas make the biggest difference.

Whenever the opportunity presents itself, I always suggest incorporating a bespoke storage or display niche into a bathroom design. They're one of those features that customers don't always think about initially, but once installed, they quickly become one of the most useful and appreciated parts of the room.

It's often these features that customers tell me they end up using every single day, even though they weren't originally on their wish list.

This luxury master ensuite bathroom refurbishment in Harvington, near Stourbridge, gave us the opportunity to incorporate several bespoke design features that combined everyday practicality with contemporary styling. Like every bathroom refurbishment we undertake, the aim wasn't simply to install new products, but to create a space that worked beautifully for the customer whilst feeling cohesive and thoughtfully designed.

Rather than leaving this section of wall unused, I designed a bespoke recessed storage niche that would become an integral part of the room, blending seamlessly with the surrounding tiling while providing valuable everyday storage and subtle mood lighting.

Designed from the Beginning

One of the biggest advantages of a bespoke bathroom refurbishment is that features like this can be planned from day one rather than added as an afterthought.

Because the niche formed part of the original design, every detail could be carefully considered before work began. The proportions, shelf position, tile layout, lighting and finishing trims were all planned together to ensure the finished feature looked like it had always belonged within the room.

This integrated approach is something we always strive for. Rather than simply installing products, we enjoy designing spaces where every element complements the next.

Every niche is designed around the individual room, so the dimensions, lighting, shelving and proportions are tailored specifically to the available space rather than relying on standard off-the-shelf solutions. This allows each feature to become part of the architecture of the room rather than something simply added afterwards.

We regularly design and install bespoke bathrooms throughout Stourbridge, Harvington and the surrounding South West Midlands, ensuring every project is tailored to both the property and the way our customers live.

Practical Storage with a Luxury Finish

The niche was intentionally designed with two distinct purposes.

The lower section provides practical storage for neatly rolled towels and everyday bathroom essentials, keeping them close to hand without adding clutter elsewhere in the room.

Above, a floating glass shelf creates an elegant display area for decorative accessories, plants or personal items, allowing the customer to add personality without sacrificing functionality.

By making use of the wall cavity, valuable storage is created without reducing the usable floor space or interrupting the clean lines of the bathroom. It's a simple idea, but one that has a significant impact on both the practicality and overall appearance of the finished room.

Unlike pre-manufactured storage solutions, every bespoke niche we create is designed specifically for the bathroom it's being installed into, allowing it to complement the room rather than dominate it.

Smart Lighting That Enhances the Experience

Lighting plays an important role in creating the atmosphere of any bathroom.

This niche is illuminated using a Philips Hue smart bulb, fully integrated with the wider smart lighting system throughout the ensuite. The lighting can be adjusted to suit different times of day, whether that's bright white light for the morning routine, softer warm lighting for a relaxing evening or subtle ambient lighting for use overnight.

Because the shelf is made from glass, light passes naturally through both sections of the niche, producing an even glow from top to bottom. This small design decision allows the entire feature to feel balanced while adding depth and warmth to the room.

Like many of the bespoke elements we create during our bathroom refurbishments, it's a feature that is equally enjoyable to look at as it is to use.

Precision in the Details

Although the finished niche appears simple, achieving this level of finish requires careful planning and precision throughout the installation.

The recessed framework must be accurately constructed, waterproofed and prepared before tiling begins. Every tile cut needs to align perfectly, particularly where internal corners meet, while the brushed metal tile trim provides crisp, clean edges that complement the other fixtures and fittings throughout the bathroom.

Attention to details like these is what creates a premium finish. Even the smallest inaccuracies become noticeable once lighting is installed, so taking the time to achieve perfect alignment is essential.

It's this level of craftsmanship that helps distinguish a bespoke installation from an off-the-shelf solution.

Why Customers Love Features Like This

While statement features naturally attract attention, it's often practical additions like this that customers mention most once they've lived with their new bathroom.

Easy access to towels, uncluttered surfaces, integrated lighting and thoughtfully designed storage all contribute to a room that's simply more enjoyable to use every day.

Good design isn't just about creating something beautiful. It's about improving how a space works and how it feels to live in for years to come.

The Details That Make a Room Feel Special

This master ensuite includes several standout features, so this storage niche probably won't be the first thing visitors notice.

However, it's exactly these carefully considered design elements that quietly elevate the overall experience of using the room every day.

The additional storage, integrated lighting, quality materials and meticulous finishing all work together to create a bathroom that feels considered, luxurious and personal. Individually they're small details, but collectively they help transform a beautiful bathroom into a truly exceptional one.

At Omega Developments, we believe the best bathrooms aren't simply fitted—they're designed. Every decision, from storage and lighting through to finishing details and material choices, should work together to create a space that's both beautiful and enjoyable to use every single day.
