Premium Herringbone LVT Flooring for a Modern Open-Plan Extension
Some parts of a project naturally become centrepieces. Others quietly bring everything together.
For this home extension in Stourbridge, the flooring was one of the most important design decisions. It needed to seamlessly connect the open-plan kitchen, dining and living space while being durable enough for everyday family life.
I've always enjoyed laying herringbone flooring. It's certainly more demanding than laying a straight plank floor, but when it's finished, the results make every extra cut worthwhile.
After careful consideration, we selected a premium 12mm V-grooved cork-backed Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) laid in a classic herringbone pattern. The result is a floor that introduces warmth, texture and character while providing the practicality, durability and comfort expected from a modern family home.
Although the flooring complements the entire extension beautifully, achieving this finish required far more planning and precision than many people realise.
Why Choose Herringbone LVT?
Herringbone has become one of the most sought-after flooring styles in recent years, and it's easy to see why.
The pattern naturally guides your eye through a room, adding movement and helping large open-plan spaces feel connected. Unlike traditional timber flooring, high-quality Luxury Vinyl Tile (LVT) combines the appearance of natural wood with exceptional durability, making it ideal for busy family homes where style and practicality need to go hand in hand.
The cork backing provides a more substantial feel underfoot while helping to reduce sound and improve comfort throughout the home.
Unlike natural timber flooring, quality LVT is also straightforward to maintain, making it an excellent long-term choice for modern family living.
It's a floor designed to look just as good years from now as it does on the day it's installed.
Precision Starts Long Before the First Plank
One of the biggest misconceptions about LVT flooring installation is that the skill lies purely in laying the planks.
In reality, the quality of the finished floor is determined long before the first plank is installed.
The subfloor has to be perfectly prepared, level and clean. Once that foundation is right, the real planning begins. Every herringbone installation starts with carefully established centre lines to ensure the pattern remains balanced throughout the room and finishes cleanly against walls, doorways, glazing and architectural features.
It's one of those installations where patience matters far more than speed.
With a room of this size, there is nowhere to hide. Every line needs to flow naturally from one end of the extension to the other.
One of the advantages of a herringbone layout is that it naturally disguises slight imperfections in room geometry. In this case, however, the extension was almost millimetre perfect, allowing the pattern to remain beautifully symmetrical throughout the entire floor.
Good workmanship is often the part nobody notices, because everything simply looks right.
Designed for Underfloor Heating
This extension incorporates a wet underfloor heating system, making LVT an excellent flooring choice.
Unlike some traditional flooring materials, quality LVT transfers heat efficiently while remaining dimensionally stable, creating a warm, comfortable surface throughout the year.
Combined with the cork backing, the finished floor feels both substantial and comfortable underfoot while maintaining excellent thermal performance.
With professional installation and normal day-to-day care, premium LVT flooring will provide many years of reliable performance.
The Details Make the Difference
The beauty of a herringbone floor lies in the details.
Every doorway, threshold, corner and change in direction requires careful planning to ensure the pattern continues naturally. Particular attention was paid around the large aluminium sliding doors and throughout the open-plan layout so that every transition looked intentional rather than forced.
Although laying the main floor required patience and precision throughout, one area demanded considerably more time.
The bespoke illuminated entrance steps leading into the room required the herringbone pattern to continue perfectly whilst incorporating integrated LED lighting and custom detailing. That feature alone took almost twice as long as laying the main floor and has its own dedicated page within our Bespoke Projects section.
The details are often what people remember, even if they don't immediately realise why the finished room feels so well balanced.
Bringing the Whole Extension Together
Flooring is one of the few elements that touches every part of a room.
Standing at one end of the extension, you can see how the herringbone pattern gently leads your eye through the entire living space, subtly connecting each area without ever dominating it.
It links the kitchen, dining and living areas into one cohesive space while providing the backdrop for every other bespoke feature within the extension, from the media wall and illuminated display niches to the architectural lighting and custom-built steps.
Rather than competing for attention, the subtle tones and natural texture of the flooring allow the craftsmanship throughout the extension to work together, creating a calm, contemporary living environment that feels both luxurious and welcoming.
Built to Be Enjoyed Every Day
Beautiful flooring shouldn't simply impress on the day it's installed.
It should continue performing for years whilst complementing the way a family lives.
This herringbone LVT flooring installation provides a durable, low-maintenance surface that's perfectly suited to modern living, balancing timeless design with everyday practicality.
Projects like this demonstrate that the best results rarely come from a single feature. They're achieved when every individual element is carefully considered and works together as part of one overall design.
