Movie sword replica dining table project.
Lord of The Rings - Shards of Narsil display.

This dining table was upgraded from a concrete-effect plain slab to an interesting movie-display and conversation piece.
The design was to include a narrow lip within the cut-out to hold the glass flush with the table top. The table material is solid-surface and was a fabricated custom piece and matching sideboard made in the same way kitchen worktops are manufactured using this material. Hygienic and hard-wearing.
The trickiest obstacle of this project to overcome was working with the table legs. The narrow-spread design of them meant the weight of the table would rest on a very small area, almost exactly the same as the display section!. The 8-seater table top is large and weighed in excess of 60kilograms and so a sub-top had to be used to lay over the legs and support the finished top without pressing in on the weak display area. This progressed onto the second part of the issue - height. the slab height had to be a minimum of 50mm to accommodate the thickest part of the hilt and glass thickness (10mm) which meant only a shallow sub-top would work before the table would start to feel too high. The base feet studs were replaced with felt to reduce the height as much as possible and an 18mm sheet of plywood was cut as the sub-top, edged with dark-grey kitchen band.
The sword display base finish went through numerous experimental versions before being decided on a satin piece of material arranged (meticulously) and the glass then bonded in place.
An enjoyable project bringing elements together to create a bespoke and good-looking piece.
